Neuwirth students gathered on Friday, April 25, 2025, for an assembly filled with games, performances, and competition to celebrate the core value of Excellence

On Friday, April 25, 2025, another exciting assembly brought Neuwirth together for a fun and memorable time. Upon entering the event, it was packed with massive energy from students of all grades, each one yelling to gain points. It also showcased a live student band performance from students Justin Rodriguez (12), Joshua Peneloza (11), Esteven Saloj (12), and Aidan Melgar (9),  which was fascinating to see due to there never being a musical performance at an assembly. The band performed some classic rock jams that were very exciting and entertaining.

Once the assembly began, the first game played was Snake. It involved a few students from the same grade teaming up to race against the other grade levels. The goal of the game was to grab a balloon, balance it between two people, and repeat, making a line of students to cross the finish line first. If the balloon dropped, they were automatically eliminated. The teams who gathered up to play were having a difficult time, but overall, most teams ended up walking backwards to collect more players and balloons. Finally, the seniors took the win for their team and earned more points, leading them to get ahead of the rest of the teams.

The next game was the Mattress Race, where two students from each grade teamed up. One person had to jump onto an air mattress to push it forward, across the gym, then run back so their partner could do the same. It was a race to see which team could make it to the finish line, although most students fell over once the game ended. In the finals were both the Seniors and Sophomores, but the seniors took it for the win.

In between the games, there was a performance by our drama class led by the drama teacher, Ms. Feo, who had her students act out the Salem witch trials which was called “The Crucible” (Witch trials are a series of prosecutions during 1692 in Massachusetts, where more than 200 individuals were accused of practicing witchcraft, and some were executed). The students who participated in this play were Carmelo Cooper, Ramon Lopez, Briana Zuniga, Santiago Dorado, Nathalie Sandoval, Dayana Garduno, Meylin Lopez, Bianey Gonzalez, Ashley Rangel, and Alexander Edwards.

Ms. Dagnino, the principal, presented the Alliance Counselor of the year to Mrs. Gutierrez in recognition of her outstanding dedication and impact on the school community. The award honors counselors who go above and beyond to support students' academic, emotional, and personal growth, and Mrs.Gutierrez truly exemplifies those qualities. In the company of Ms. Gutierrez were her parents, her sister, and her husband, Neuwirth’s own math teacher, Mr. Coleman. The family all spoke on how happy and proud they were of her accomplishments. The audience applauded, which created an emotional space in which the family was even moved to tears by all the love being received from the crowd. Overall, this was a memorable moment for Mrs.Gutierrez’s family, knowing that their daughter had made such a meaningful difference in the lives of so many students here at Neuwirth, who are so grateful to have her as a person whom they can trust.

Led by Ms. Melany, the cheer squad performed an energetic and exciting routine that brought the crowd to life. Their choreography was sharp and well-rehearsed, including stunts, pyramids, and cheers that showcased their school spirit. The audience clapped along and cheered loudly, clearly impressed by the team's enthusiasm and talent. It was a perfect way to boost the energy of the assembly and celebrate school pride. It was a fitting send-off for several of the Senior cheer squad members, who have put in so many hours of hard work and dedication to become the amazing cheer team they are.

In the end, the Seniors claimed first place, putting in a strong effort and showing consistent determination throughout the assembly events. Their teamwork and energy helped secure their win. The juniors followed closely behind in second place. They made a remarkable comeback, starting near the bottom but rising through the ranks, especially during the air mattress race. Although they came close, they couldn’t quite overtake the seniors in the final movements. The sophomores finished in third place, competing hard and trying to edge out the juniors, but ultimately fell short. Lastly, the freshman came in fourth. While they showed movements of promise, their overall energy and coordination could have been stronger.

The assembly ended on a high note, with cheers, smiles, and a strong sense of school pride filling the gym with an unforgettable moment of unity and celebration at Neuwirth. What will the assemblies look like next year? Will the current Juniors continue their newfound enthusiasm and be the new champions? Will the current sophomores show even more enthusiasm with costumes and chants? Will the current freshmen finally show some life? And what kind of new class will we welcome in with a new class of freshmen taking their place on campus? We will have to wait til next year to find out.
