The past few months have seen several huge shifts in the presidential election, including a brand new candidate to square off against Donald Trump

On August 28th, Kamala Harris delivered her “Acceptance Speech” to everybody gathered at the Democratic National Convention in which she gladly accepted her nomination to run in hopes of becoming the first female president of the United States of America. In the speech, she stated how she and her campaign will stay true to their promise to help the U.S. economy through the mud that plagued Biden's time in office. This speech significantly impacted the political votes and polls as Harris started to gain votes and closed in on Trump's lead as there was a huge margin difference between the expected votes before and after she replaced Biden as the nominee.

The speech was noteworthy for many reasons, most notably that current President Joe Biden had dropped out of the presidential election race so late in the election, providing the opportunity for Harris to run for office This unusual and surprising moment set the stage for Harris to speak to the American people in a new way, as the potential next President of The United States of America.

Trump maintained a slight lead over much of the campaign leading up to the acceptance speech

In the speech, Harris made some targeted comments about her opponent Donald Trump which seemed to be helping her sway her voting base as she said “he is not willing to help in women's rights”  in contrast to her willingness to help provide health insurance to those in need and to secure protections for reproductive rights.

A Harris post on X elaborates on the differences between Trump’s positions on Women’s rights and her own.

This was just one of the policies that Harris sought to differentiate herself from her opponent and her predecessor. The challenge that Harris is facing is an attempt to shift the focus away from Biden, who was largely seen as unpopular, and toward herself as a fresh and new perspective, while also establishing her credibility as the candidate with the most trustworthiness and qualifications.

The shift in messaging seemed to work, as polls reflect the margin of whom young voters are most likely to vote for and favor Harris by 20% to Trump, in comparison to Biden’s margin, which was only 6%.

A recent poll shows young voters more likely to vote for Harris than Biden.

You may be asking why this matters? Well, It matters significantly because it will result in who will be in charge and take leadership of the country. Harris used the Presidential Debate that occurred on September 10th, to further talk about her plans to address immigration and border policy, as well as big plans seeking to help out the working and middle class due to the lack of available homes and inflation of rent. These types of policies affect our neighborhood and our school as they determine how much construction happens, where people can live, and their quality of life.

So I suggest we take into consideration whom we vote for and we should convince those who haven’t made up their minds to vote and give a brief explanation of why. The presidential election that will determine who will become our President is less than a month away - November 5, 2024 - so we should be informed and use our voices and platforms to make our voices heard.
