About a month ago, everyone was going crazy about how on January 19, 2025, TikTok would be officially banned in the U.S.. This news made many people wonder where they would go to create and watch their short videos. Apps like YouTube and Instagram were a good idea for replacements since they both have a feature that lets you create videos and watch short videos from others. But instead of those apps, people decided to download this app that’s more similar to Instagram and Pinterest, but it lets you watch and create short videos like TikTok, the app is called RedNote.

RedNote is a Chinese social media app that lets you socialize with other people online, and as I’ve already mentioned, it lets you watch and create short videos. A note from the RedNote team on the app store describes it as “a place where people share their lives and get connected with each other.” The app was founded in 2013 by President Miranda Qu and CEO Charlwin Mao. Sounds like a good TikTok replacement, right? Your enjoyment level may vary, as most of the app is in Mandarin, making it difficult for new users to understand what they’re seeing, reading, or listening to.

Because of the TikTok ban, about 700,000 new users joined the app in a very short time. Despite being in Mandarin, a lot of new users have started to learn the language to understand the app and connect with users from China. Many American and Chinese users have been able to connect, leading many to speculate that it could become a major player in the social media space.

The rise of RedNote was fast, but its fall was even faster. Less than 24 hours after it was banned, TikTok got “unbanned” and resumed its dominance as the go-to source for video creation and consumption.

What do you think about RedNote? If you downloaded it, did you like it? Are you still checking it, or did you already delete it off your phone once TikTok was saved? With the future of TikTok still uncertain, we will likely see other apps like RedNote try to gain traction and become the next big thing in social media and content sharing.
