The Minecraft Movie has become a surprise sensation as audiences flock to the theater to see their childhood memories played on on screen… But is it actually good?
“CHICKEN JOCKEY,” yelled the theater as the Minecraft Movie played in the background. The sound of every Minecraft fan screaming,” I… AM STEVE!” in unison is a golden moment in cinema history.
But looking closer, aside from the fan experience, was the film that good? Is it worth your money to watch it at the cinema? We will give you an honest review of the film and tell you whether it's worth watching or not. Now, let’s mine into this film and craft our opinion! (pun intended).
Let’s get straight to the point. The movie was mediocre overall; it was neither bad nor good, but it was just in the middle. We will be diving deep into the film, so if you want to avoid spoilers, we suggest you stop reading. 🙂
The Good Part
To get us started, let’s talk about the good parts. The story was goofy and funny at the same time, like Steve saying many funny lines. There was also a sense of faithfulness to the source material, although the villain, Malgosha, was not part of the original game. The visual effects and CGI were incredible, although some creatures looked a bit uncanny, but the landscapes and set designs were a spectacle to behold.
Getting to specifics, Malgosha trying to stab Steve multiple times, and General Chungus, was very funny and had a great personality. As well, this one villager, Nitwit, got out of the Minecraft world and went to the real world, where he was crossing the road and got hit by the principal, and she offered the villager a date since she hit the villager with her car 😱. And at the end of the movie, the villager said to the principal to marry him 🤯 even though they knew each other for one day, and she said yes, which is crazy, a villager getting rizzy like that.
The Bad Part
Although the movie has some meme-able moments and some jaw-dropping visual effects, the movie overall isn’t that good. Aside from Steve, the other characters don’t catch your attention, as they aren’t explored that much. Some of the characters' actions seem nonsensical, and their dialogue also goes flat at certain points of the film. Some of the dialogue even feels somewhat corny, although we do see that the lines are targeting the young audience demographic. The plot feels rushed, and some things that the characters do have no reason behind them. Besides the Minecraft world, the external world feels filler and doesn’t contribute to the character’s development because it isn’t explored much.
It seems like this movie was made specifically for diehard Minecraft fans, and not for the general audience, because there are some references in here that people who don’t play the game won’t understand. There’s a lot of deadpan and awkward humor in the film, but like they say, humor is subjective, so your mileage may vary on how funny you find the jokes.
The Score
Overall, It’s a 6/10
